 System Safety


  • Overview

    Detailed understanding of system safety theory and how it is applied across the Asset/Capability Life Cycle

    Intended Audience

    Project Managers, and Engineers who require an appreciation of what System Safety is, and how the principles should be applied in their organisation

  • Overview
    This course is a combination of theory and practice of System Safety techniques that are applied within a specific domain. Each course is tailored to the domain requirements (regulations, standards, etc) and follows case studies and specific examples relevant to the domain throughout the course.

    Intended Audience
    Safety Practitioners, engineers, and operators supporting the introduction of new systems into the Defence inventory.

    Note
    At the request of clients, the course can be credentialled (not included in price) as units towards a post-graduate qualification. This typically requires students to undertake formal assessment during and after the completion of the course to meet the assessment requirements.

  • Overview
    This course is for Senior Management who need to understand their accountabilities and responsibilities in relation to safety. Since the ratification of the WHS Act 2011, there is a legal requirement for executives to understand their roles with respect to safety and apply principles of due diligence, but at its heart, these principles are just good practice.

    Intended Audience
    Senior Management and/or those who have accountabilities / responsibilities in relation to safety within their organisation.

  • Overview
    This course is 50% advanced theory and 50% application of theory where students get to practice the application of functional and advanced hazard identification and analysis techniques.

    Intended Audience
    System safety practitioners and Design Engineers who are extensively involved in the review or development of safety artefacts to support the design process.

    The course is particularly useful for individuals who are extensively involved in assessing outputs of system safety techniques from system Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and/or those will need to undertake basic system safety identification and analysis activities in the course of their duties.

    Note
    The course can be tailored to focus on the introduction of COTS/MOTS systems or support the upgrade of systems during their in-service phase

  • Overview
    This course is aimed at CASG acquisition project and sustainment program staff who need to understand the application of CASG requirements for System Safety on CoA and Contractor organisations.

    Intended Audience
    CASG project and sustainment staff who are responsible and/or accountable for developing and accepting System Safety artefacts including Contract Deliverables (CDRL).


Engineering Management

  • Overview
    This course is aimed at providing organisations with a course that combines theory with a practical project that allows students to apply the systems engineering principles they have learnt to a project.

    Students are put into teams where they have to compete for a contract to build a mine-detection system using Lego™. The winning team is the team that scores the highest against the Tender Evaluation criteria, which has been set from the criteria listing in the Functional and Performance Specification (FPS). Teams must demonstrate how their solutions meets the requirements. Teams are eliminated if they do not meet Essential criteria (e.g., must move), and additional points for meeting Desirable criteria (e.g., must scale an incline of 30 degrees) and Highly Desirable criteria (e.g., must scale an incline of 45 degrees.)

    The course gets students to practice skills such as requirements management and conduct cost and performance trade-off studies as each piece of Lego comes with a price, weight and reliability, of which there are requirements to meet certain levels.

    Intended Audience
    Project Managers, Engineers and Logistics Specialist who need a hands-on appreciation for the principles of Systems Engineering.

    Note
    The course was originally aimed at providing CASG graduates with a basic understanding of how Systems Engineering in undertaken in major Defence projects but has been attended by executives who have described the course as a “very practical and fun” way of learning about Systems Engineering.


Governance, Risk & Assurance


  • Overview
    This course provides an introduction to the principles of governance and assurance. It outlines what good governance is and discusses what governance does for organisations. The course explains this through Case Studies, outlining the associated benefits of good governance and issues when governance is done poorly. Using the ALARP Solutions 8 Facets of Assurance, the course provides clarity in definitions and then applies the 8 Facets to optimise an assurance program in support of better decision making.

    Intended Audience
    Individuals accountable and responsible for setting up governance frameworks and providing ongoing assurance who need familiarity in the concepts.

  • Overview
    This course uses the ALARP Solutions Enterprise Governance, Risk and Assurance Model (EGRAM) as a basis upon which to build governance and assurance frameworks and to tailor them to a particular organisation. Students will be introduced to theoretical approaches such as Viable Systems Modelling; Graphical Notation Standards such as Claim Argument Evidence (CAE) and Goal Structured Notation (GSN); and measurement theory. The EGRAM is used to apply these theoretical approaches in a practical way to generate:

    1. governance requirements for an organisation,

    2. a governance framework which enables the requirements to be met,

    3. accountabilities, activities, artefacts and tools that are logically situated within the framework,

    4. an assurance framework (building on our “8 Facets of Assurance” & introducing the ALARP Solutions Layer of Control Framework), and

    5. meaningful measures to support decision making.

    Students are given an opportunity to develop their own governance and assurance requirements for their organisation in a practical learning session.

    Intended Audience
    Individuals accountable and responsible for setting up governance frameworks and providing ongoing assurance who need the skills to want an introduction to the concepts.

  • Overview
    This course starts with a conceptual framework (the Layers of Control Framework) to help participants identify their risk management context. Based on this context the course explores various risk management approaches that are more suitable to a given context than others, and that better support decision making within their organisation, based on their risk appetite and culture. The course will also provide guidance for when legislated risk frameworks and concepts apply e.g., the principle of "reasonably practicable" vs the legal requirement to demonstrate health and safety risk have been minimised so far as reasonably practicable.

  • Overview
    Understand the principles of measurement, how to define relevant measures, and how to build a structured measurement framework that captures the measures in a way that supports presentation of data to inform effective decision making

    Individuals accountable and responsible for building and reporting measures to support decision making

Nuclear Systems

  • Overview
    Delivered by nuclear physicists, engineers and submarine specialists, this course is aimed at individuals and organisations who require a basic understanding of nuclear energy, how it is used to power submarines, and broader considerations for Australia including the management of nuclear safety and regulation.

    The course provides a high-level understanding of nuclear energy and safety principles and is suitable for anyone who will potentially be involved in or impacted by the acquisition, operation, and future sustainment of nuclear submarines in Australia.
